This joint NEXTGenIO/SAGE workshop will discuss how these two H2020 I/O and storage-oriented projects are uniquely addressing the challenges of IO at Exascale. The workshop will feature speakers from both projects and presents the progress these initiatives have made in tackling this hard problem. The talks will be very interactive!

Project Descriptions
The NEXTGenIO project (www.nextgenio.eu) addresses a key challenge not only for Exascale, but also for HPC and data intensive computing in general: the challenge of I/O performance. As core-counts have massively increased over the past few years, the performance of I/O subsystems have struggled to keep up with computational performance and have become a key bottleneck on today’s largest systems. NEXTGenIO will develop a prototype computing platform that uses on-node non-volatile memory, bridging the latency gap between DRAM and disk, thus removing this bottleneck. In addition to the hardware that will be built as part of the project, NEXTGenIO will develop the software stack (from OS and runtime support to programming models and tools) that goes hand-in-hand with this new hardware architecture.
The SAGE project (www.sagestorage.eu) tasks itself with building a data centric infrastructure for handling extreme data in the Exascale/Exabyte era centred on a storage-oriented solution, ‘Percipient Storage’ – co-designed with I/O intensive codes and data centric applications. SAGE incorporates cutting edge innovations from an ecosystem of critical supporting research areas in highly distributed storage platforms, data analytics frameworks, data management tools and programming models. SAGE proposes an advanced object based storage solution, with a very flexible new API enabling applications and external data sets to exploit a deep I/O hierarchy consisting of different types of storage tiers (including NVRAM, Flash and Disk technologies). The solution will have the capability to run computations on data in any tier, with a homogenous view of data throughout the stack, drastically reducing the energy footprint of data movements.
