The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of the UK's seven publicly funded Research Councils responsible for supporting co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development in the areas of particle physics, nuclear physics, astronomy and space science in addition to providing large-scale scientific facilities which provide a range of research techniques using neutrons, muons, lasers and x-rays, and high performance computing and complex analysis of large data sets. STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides large scale HPC facilities, computing data services and infrastructure at the Rutherford Appleton and Daresbury laboratories in the U.K. The department also includes world leading experts in a number of scientific fields including computational chemistry, computational engineering, materials science, band theory, computational biology, advanced research computing, atomic and molecular physics, numerical analysis, software engineering, data services, petascale storage, scientific information and scientific computing technology. To ensure future technologies meet the needs of researchers, and to develop new services SCD collaborates with computer science researchers and development companies as well as scientific researchers throughout the UK, Europe and the world in a broad range of disciplines. STFC will contribute to comparing the SAGE system with other existing object storage technologies, as potential storage technologies suitable for HPC computing. STFC will liaise with the science communities in the project to understand their use cases to ensure the requirements associated with these have been identified and tested where feasible across these technologies.
